Dorothy Pattison Hospital Windows
12 Jun 2015A.T.B. was approached to carry out the replacement of windows at Dorothy Pattison Hospital in Walsall, a mental health hospital comprising three wards: two gender specific acute inpatient wards (Ambleside and Langdale), a residential rehabilitation unit (Grasmere ward) and an Extra Care Area (ECA).
The hospital is part of Dudley Walsall Mental Health Trust and offers specialist assessment, care and treatment to people who are experiencing mental health difficulties.
The new windows were to be installed in Langdale ward and 136 Suite, a facility undergoing conversion from an administration area.
Following initial discussions between A.T.B. and the team at Dorothy Pattison regarding design and health and safety requirements it was decided to replace the existing windows with bespoke versions of A.T.B’s Taurus Max mental health horizontal slider to allow for the unique design of the hospital windows. The Trust subsequently carried out a risk assessment on the windows at ATB Systems premises to test that the window was indeed fit for purpose.
A.T.B.’s mental health hospital windows are the latest addition to the Taurus Max range of security windows and doors.
Designed specifically to meet the needs of the mental health sector the horizontal slider has an anti-ligature pull handle and robust locking system as well as an integral security mesh which is available in two light transmittance options.
The mesh has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, delivering security in a sensitive and subtle manner as well as allowing maximum levels of natural light and ventilation. Available in two density options for either mental health security or non mental health applications the anti-vandal mesh can withstand the harshest of treatment, and is even resistant to rifle attack.

The design for Suite 136 ultimately comprised of two slider side panels combined with a fixed middle section. Langdale ward featured a fixed and a sliding panel at the top and 2 fixed panels on the bottom, all equipped with the anti-ligature features of the Taurus Max Healthcare range. Opening panes have a full lock-off facility with keyed alike euro profile cylinder to either lock windows open or shut.”
An additional request was for the new windows to blend with the existing windows in the other areas of the building. Polyamide thermal break allows dual colour options, with different colours to the interior and exterior faces. As a result the new windows were painted brown on the outside to match the old ones, with white interiors.
Langdale ward remained operational during the installation period which was carried out over 2 days without issue.
